What Sets Northwest Wado-ryu Apart

If you’ve walked into a few martial arts schools, you’ve probably noticed they can feel pretty similar on the surface. But when you train with us at Northwest Wado-ryu, something feels different right away. It’s not just the style, it’s the whole approach.

We teach traditional Wado-ryu Karate, which blends powerful strikes with smooth, natural body movement. It’s practical for self-defense, great for fitness, and builds real confidence without a lot of unnecessary flash. We don’t have the long, deep stances that put unnecessary strain on the body. We are a functional martial art suitable for all ages, rather than a flashy style with a lot of pomp and circumstance. But what REALLY makes us stand out is everything else that happens inside our dojo.

Instructors Who Actually Care

Our head instructor, Sensei Chris Schwartz, has poured years into building this school. He’s not just teaching techniques, he’s invested in every student’s growth, both on and off the mat. You’ll also find a dedicated senior instructor and a leadership team who remembers what it was like to be a new white belt. They take the time to correct form patiently, celebrate small wins, and push you when you need it.

Parents often tell us the instructors are very patient and make the kids feel welcome and supported. Whether you’re a kid working on focus or an adult trying to get back in shape, someone is always in your corner.

A Real Community, Not Just a Gym

One of the things I hear most from parents and students is how much they love the atmosphere here. We’re a tight-knit group that genuinely supports each other. Parents cheer for every kid during testing, students motivate one another in class, and we celebrate birthdays, promotions, and personal milestones together.

It’s truly family-friendly. You’ll see little brothers and sisters training side-by-side or parents training alongside their kids. No egos, no intimidation, just people of all ages working hard and having fun while they do it. Many families tell us the dojo feels like home.

We’re A Local Family, Wanting to Give Back To The Community We Love

Sensei may have been born in Japan, but he married into a local family that has been in the region since the 1800’s. Arriving in Moscow in 2002, Schwartz Sensei knew he wanted to contribute something positive to Moscow, and improve the lives of the people in this community. Knowing first hand the benefits karate had for him as a child, he knew kids in Moscow could benefit as well. He began teaching karate for the University of Idaho in 2002, and we opened our downtown location in 2017.

Our motto is building champions in life, and that begins with us. We believe in giving back to the community and supporting our local School districts with free classes, seminars, events and donations. When our local school district needs assistance with children who struggle with confidence, bullying, or maybe their home lives could be better, they reach out to us for help. We give scholarships for karate lessons, teach anti bullying seminars, and host supply drives to assist schools and kids in need.

See our previous blog post about how karate helps build confidence, perseverance, and so much more than just kicks and punches.

A Competition Team That’s Making Waves

If you want proof that our program works, look at our competition team. These athletes have been stacking up medals at regional and national events, including Grand Champion trophies and strong showings at big tournaments like the North American Open.

Even more exciting, two of our students, Hayden Schwartz and George DeLeon, were recently selected to represent the United States at the WUKF World Championships in Romania this summer. That’s not just “Sensei’s kid” making it; George is a regular student from Colfax who put in the work and earned his spot. It shows what is possible when you commit to the training.

Our team isn’t just for the super-talented few. We encourage anyone who wants to challenge themselves to join. The discipline, focus, and resilience they build carries over into school, work, and life.

Why Families Keep Choosing Us

Parents love that their kids are getting stronger, more confident, and learning respect and discipline in a positive environment. Adults appreciate a serious yet welcoming place to train that fits into real life. And everyone benefits from the friendships that form on the mat.

At the end of the day, Northwest Wado-ryu Karate isn’t trying to be the biggest school around. We’re focused on being the right one for our community, the one where students actually improve, families feel welcome, and people leave class a little better than when they walked in.
